Dani Burbrook - artist, teacher, collaborator
Dani Burbrook’s work as an educator began in her early twenties, working as a facilitator of music groups in the community cultural development sector. A skilled musician and songwriter in her own right, Dani’s early interest in the technology of music led to many years as a freelance sound engineer, working primarily with small theatre companies and in live music.
A strong desire to hone her painting skills led to Dani winning a place at the acclaimed North Adelaide School of Art in South Australia, but within the first six months an encounter in a workshop with renowned ceramicist Ben Kypridakis saw her swap departments and focus her studies on working with clay. Furthering her art education at the SA School of Art, Dani majored in photography and sculpture.
A powerful need to make a greater contribution led her on to a Graduate Bachelor in Education with a double major in arts education and technology education. After eighteen months in a catholic school, Dani pursued her desire to work in the public education sector. Twenty years experience in the public secondary school sector in Adelaide has seen her develop her skills across a range of areas. Starting as an art and design & technology teacher, Dani moved into leadership positions where she has coordinated year levels and the wellbeing team, coordinated an off-campus learning facility, become highly skilled in the fine art of behaviour management and developed a passion for working with disengaged young people. While acknowledging and embracing the fact that leadership roles can offer the opportunity to affect change at a systemic level, Dani has never lost her passion and enthusiasm for working directly with students in the classroom. As a life long learner, Dani continues her own professional development journey which has seen her begin teaching maths and numeracy, developing programs for and teaching EALD students and developing strategies to engage learners using online learning tools.
A passionate advocate for genuine student voice and learner centred pedagogies, a long term commitment to the practice of learning as an act of collaboration and an unshakable belief in the essential role of the Arts in education and life, it is with enthusiasm and drive that Dani continues her commitment to working in education.
Dani Burbrook is dedicated to her own continued learning, believing that both as a teacher and a human being, life long learning is essential. As well as engaging in both formal and informal streams of professional development, Dani continues to foster her own creative practice as an artist, musician, imaginist, thinker, maker and creative collaborator.
